Journey of a Hearing Loss Client

Otoscope checking for hearing loss

Acknowledging Hearing Loss

It can be quite daunting when you realise that you are not hearing as well as you used to and decide to seek help.

Not everyone who books in for a hearing test walks away with hearing aids. A lot of the time, clients walk away with some simple tips on how to use good tactics to improve their listening abilities and/or manage their Tinnitus.

The idea of needing to wear hearing aids is enough to put anyone off going to have an assessment but this is not an excuse to put your head in the sand.

Getting Hearing Aids

If you do end up needing hearing aids there are a lot of options – and those bulky whistling aids from years ago are gone now.

The first step is having your hearing checked, there is nothing to lose from coming in to talk with a professional about the problems you are having.

It is a good idea to have a full assessment done sooner rather than later as it will give you a reference to check back on in coming years so you can monitor your hearing.

Booking an Appointment

Once you have decided to go ahead, all you need to do is talk to our receptionist and book in a time that suits you best.

At the appointment, our clinician will talk with you about your medical history and the trouble you are having with your hearing.

After a look in your ears to eliminate wax build-up, we will run a test to determine the functionality of your middle ear system.

Then you will need to respond to a beep test and a speech discrimination test. The combined tests allow us to diagnose your hearing loss and determine which speech sounds you are missing out on. The results will be explained to you in a way you can understand and we welcome all your questions.

Improving Hearing

There are many tactics you can use to improve your hearing without wearing hearing aids. And if you suffer with Tinnitus, we can give you advice and tips to try to improve it.

If you want to try hearing devices then we will book you in for a fitting appointment so that we can customise the settings to suit your hearing loss.

You can expect to provide a lot of feedback to the clinician about how they sound in the quiet room and we will even have you step out into the noisy shopping centre to try them with back ground noise before you leave.

Then we will show you the simple steps of how to use them and you are set to try them out at home.

Living with Hearing Aids

After you have had the devices for at least a week, we will see you again to discuss how you are managing with them. And it gives us an opportunity to do more fine tuning if there are some situations that you would like to hear better in.

Then we will see you every few months or simply give you a phone call to check how things are going.

Anytime you need to come back in you just need to call or drop in.

We do all the cleaning and trouble-shooting over the counter so you don’t need to make an appointment if there’s an issue down the track.

We endeavour to help everyone hear better then when first came in, so give us a call if you would like to have a discussion with a professional.

There are no obligations and if you’re not sure if you want to commit to having a full test, we offer a free 15 minute hearing screening that will give you an idea of what your options are.
